I think I have a sinkhole, what do I do?

If you think you have a sinkhole, don’t panic.

What is a sinkhole? Well, this depends if the sinkhole is manmade or occurs naturally. By definition (if a sinkhole occurs naturally), a sinkhole is cavity in the ground, especially in limestone bedrock, caused by water erosion and providing a route for surface water to disappear underground. These are the typical sinkhole you find in Florida. Sinkholes in Georgia however, are generally manmade. These sinkholes (also known as trash pits or builder debris pits), are caused when someone buries organic material such as trees, limbs, stumps, and so forth. Since there are no laws that prevents people from this practice (a common misconception), developers, and builders have used this practice when clearing lots for new homes.

Who do I call if I have a sinkhole? If you have a sinkhole, you should call someone who deals with sinkholes like Bailey Construction & Landscaping, LLC. We are the sinkhole experts! When dealing with sinkholes, there are a lot of do’s and don’ts. There are many people popping up that promise lifetime guarantees, use the wrong dirt to fix your sinkhole, pump foam into the ground to fix it, and so many other things. Stay away!! Lifetime guarantees only last as long as the company in business, the correct fill dirt will keep your sinkhole form actually sinking, and foam will never stop organic material from decaying. Actual Sinkhole contractors are hard to find. We get calls from people out of state all the time asking us what to do (sorry, we don’t repair sinkholes out of state). If you run into this situation, call and excavating company first to see what experience they have in sinkhole remediation.

What does a sinkhole look like? Trash pits are tricky because they can look like random low spots in your yard, or tree stump holes. Trash pits are also tricky because sometimes they take many years to form before you are able to see a change in your yard’s appearance.

Here are some sinkholes Bailey Construction & Landscaping has encountered over the years from start to finish:
