September’s Cool Plant… Toad Lilly

The “cool plant” for September is the perennial, Toad Lily or known by its scientific name Tricyrtis hirta. This perennial gets its name for the unique appearance. These “cool” perennial flowers have alternate, 6-inch leaves on the arching, and hairy stems that are usually 2 feet high. These Fall plants bear single, creamy white flowers, often in clusters, which open to purple-spotted petals and centers resembling pieces of chenille along its stem. Their flowers look very similar to a mottled orchid. These are shade plants that usually bloom from September to October. Their blooming times make them excellent for any fall garden since they bloom so late. These flowering plants are pretty common in Georgia Landscapes.
